What It Means to Be Honest With Yourself and How to Do It

In this article, I’ll explore what it truly means to be honest with yourself, why we deceive ourselves, and why we’re often so afraid to be straightforward. Perhaps you feel it’s time to look in the mirror and face some hard truths, or maybe you’re feeling stuck in a rut and want to know how to break free. Let me share my perspective with you. I am Rodion Ray, a writer and philosopher.

What It Means to Be Honest With Yourself and How to Do It - Rodion Ray

Being honest means listening to your inner voice.

In reality, the question isn’t about learning how to listen to yourself, but about learning how to hear yourself. Our inner "self" is constantly speaking to us through feelings, emotions, and our inner dialogue. The problem is that we keep choosing to ignore it. We pretend we don’t hear it; we pretend we don’t notice. But why does this happen? This is the very barrier that prevents us from being authentic.

Why do we keep deceiving ourselves?

Despite the fact that we all have our own desires, dreams, opinions, and voices, we repeatedly deceive ourselves. Why do we do it? Don’t we want the truth? Sometimes, yes. But that’s not the only reason. Let me point out a few:

Fear of judgment. Many feel that their true selves must be hidden from the world. They fear that if they show their true nature, they will be judged by society, parents, friends, children, or colleagues. So, they wear masks and are terrified to take them off.

Fear of change. When we wear a mask for too long, we become afraid that if we take it off, our lives will never be the same. Sometimes we don’t want to be honest because we are afraid of losing our jobs, families, friends, money, or status.

Reluctance to leave the comfort zone. Unlike the previous point, this isn't just about fear—it’s about a lack of desire to change anything. Intuitively, we know that being honest means change. But humans are creatures of habit, and not everyone likes to shake things up. You could say it’s just a habit—a habit of living in an illusion.

Fear of the truth itself. Sometimes we refuse to admit the obvious simply because we aren't sure we want to know. We aren't sure we can live with the reality or accept things we’d rather ignore. This is perhaps the most difficult case.

Fanatical obsession with a goal that contradicts your nature. For example, you might desperately want to be famous and wealthy, but you are a natural introvert who craves silence. In such cases, the hunger for money and a successful career drowns out your inner voice so it won’t interfere with your pursuit.

So, what does it actually mean to be honest with yourself?

It means understanding yourself, accepting yourself, and revealing yourself—despite fear or laziness. If our insecurities and lethargy are stronger than our thirst for self-discovery, nothing will come of it. And if something does happen, it will quickly fade away, forgotten and hidden behind the mask again. Therefore, the first step toward self-honesty begins with a burning desire to get to the bottom of the truth. It must be strong enough that nothing can stop it: not the fear of others' opinions, not the fear of loss, and not the fear of changing your life if your true self demands it.

How do you find your true self?

If you have been ready for a long time to see what is hiding behind your mask, and you aren’t afraid of change or how the world might react to the "new you," then you are ready to start unraveling your greatest mystery.I mentioned earlier that our true essence is always speaking to us; we just need to hear it. But there are barriers on this path. Let’s remove them.

What stops us from hearing our inner voice?Imposed beliefs.

Opinions from society, parents, friends, and colleagues. It is vital to clearly distinguish between your own thoughts and the ones projected onto you. There are many practices to help with this, but the core is simple: ask your heart. Your feelings are the key to understanding what is truly yours versus what has been imposed on you.

The fast pace of life. Studying yourself requires time. A fast-paced lifestyle prevents us from having a conversation with ourselves and looking inward. Living on autopilot makes self-discovery impossible. Slow down for a while, find a quiet place, and give yourself some time. Take a step back, clear the mental clutter. And when the noise dies down, you will finally hear yourself.

It’s time to be straightforward with yourself.

You know, this process never truly ends. Once you discover one side of yourself, you’ll eventually want to discover another. Sometimes I feel this journey is endless. Yes, at times it is difficult and thorny, but it is worth it. I wish everyone reading this finds their true self and enjoys the process. After all, wearing a mask is uncomfortable—it often slips, and it’s hard to breathe.

Stella’s and Sophia’s hair salons stood directly across from one another, separated by a bustling city street. One evening, Stella, gloomy and lost in thought, stopped by Sophia’s shop just as her friend was preparing to close.

"I don’t know what to do," Stella sighed bitterly. "You have a constant line of clients, and I am genuinely happy for your success. But we both graduated from hair school with honors! Why do so few people come to me?"

"First of all, don't lose heart," Sophia replied, looking at her friend’s weary face. "And second, you could use a fresh look yourself. Why don't I give you a stylish haircut for free? Perhaps it will lift your spirits..."

"Yes, I know I look a mess," Stella admitted. "I won't refuse; I’ve actually felt quite embarrassed in front of my customers lately."

Stella settled into the chair, and Sophia set to work. The conversation quickly drifted to other topics, helping Stella distract herself from her somber thoughts. An hour later, the new haircut was finished. Looking in the mirror, Stella couldn’t contain her delight.

"Incredible!" she exclaimed. "Thank you so much! You didn’t just cheer me up; you completely transformed my look! To show my gratitude, I’ll bring you one of my rarest flowers tomorrow - you won’t find such beauty anywhere else!"

"Oh, you don't have to!" Sophia protested. "I know how much you cherish your flowers and how dear they are to you!"

"I won’t take no for an answer!" Stella declared firmly. "All the windowsills in my house are overflowing with flowers - you know how much I love them! So, Sophia, will you finally share the secret of your success? Why is your salon so popular?"

"I’ve already shown you," Sophia smiled.

Stella beamed, her cheeks flushing a soft pink. "I understand now! Thank you so much!" she cried, and the two friends shared a warm embrace.

The following evening, Stella rushed into Sophia’s salon and announced, "I did it! I spent the whole day giving free haircuts. Everyone was so surprised... Tell me, Sophia, do you think the clients will start flooding in soon?"

"My goodness, Stella, is that really what I was trying to convey yesterday?" Sophia gasped. "I cut your hair yesterday only to make you smile, so you would realize that you aren’t just a hairdresser—you are a creator of beauty and confidence! When I serve a client, I always strive to make them happy, and that brings me immense joy! That is why my business is doing better than yours.

"Stella covered her face with her hands and sank onto the sofa.

"How could I have been so wrong!" she cried. "You’re right... oh God, you’re so right! All this time I was just cutting hair, while you were making people happy. It's unbelievable..."

A month passed. And a month later, both friends were happy. Sophia - in her hair salon, and Stella - across the street. In her own flower shop.
